8 steps to getting started

1. Download the MyHud App or Log in to MyHud via the web  

Go to MyHud to access your timetable, emails, Brightspace, print credits, tutor and personalised information. You can access the MyHud website, or you can download the MyHud app from the Apple App Store (for Apple devices) or Google Play Store (for Android devices). Using MyHud will enable you to access most digital resources through a single sign on. 

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught Students

If you are a re-registering student, your password will stay the same as it was last term.

Postgraduate Research Students

If you are a Postgraduate Research student, you will be asked to enter your username (e.g. firstname.lastname@hud.ac.uk some people will have a number, N, to distinguish between duplicate names). Your password will initially be set as your date of birth (in the format ddmmmyy - e.g. 15jan02). If you are a re-registering student, your password will stay the same as it was last term.

 

You will then be asked to complete a few additional steps to ensure that your IT account is secure. You can watch a video explaining the security process.

Once the security steps have been completed you will be taken to MyHud where you can access: 

• Your timetable - this details all your scheduled sessions, providing information on your meetings both face to face and online. Check this regularly as any updates and changes will be posted here first. You can find more information on understanding your timetable on the timetable information pages.
• Your University email - this will be used for all important correspondence and you are expected to check it regularly.  
• News and announcements - to keep you posted on the widest range of University activities, events and news.

2. Check your email

Once you are in MyHud, make sure you know where to find your University email.  It's one of the main ways that University staff will use to contact you so it's important to check your messages regularly.

For security reasons, we need you to use your University email address when you contact members of staff or services at the University so that we know it's really you, unless of course you are contacting IT Support about a problem with your email!  If you contact us from a personal address we may have to ask you to resend your message from the University system.

You can install the Microsoft Outlook app on your mobile device to make keeping up to date with your email even easier. (Outlook is the only email app which will work with the University systems.)

3. Log in and learn in Brightspace

The Brightspace virtual learning environment houses your course and academic information. Lectures, reading lists, timetabled meetings with tutors and fellow students can be accessed via Brightspace. You will submit some of your assignments via Brightspace and receive results. Your course leaders will post tasks and make regular announcements here, so getting familiar with Brightspace is crucial in getting ready for University.

4. Access your online Induction resource, Huddersfield Essentials: Induction, once enrolled 

These induction resources will provide you with information and activities to start your year. They have been designed to enable you to start once you have enrolled and complete it independently, so, if you've already enrolled, dive in and get started! It contains lots of important information, so you may wish to revisit it later in the year. Content includes: 

• Preparing for University study, learning and research.  
• Digital resources, tools and training. 
• Your support, facilities and resources. 
• Library facilities, services and support. 

Get started and discover all you need to know in Huddersfield Essentials, your induction resource (there may be a delay to access the resource after enrolment but don't worry, you can complete it at your leisure).

5. Check your connection 

Once you have activated your IT account (see step 1), have a go at doing the following to see that everything is working. 

• Watch a short video to test your sound and video. Try Teams for Education (2 minutes), or Using Microsoft Teams to Streamline Research (1 minute).
• Test your microphone by logging in to Microsoft Teams and following the Microsoft Teams instructions to make a test call with an automated service. 
• You can access Microsoft 365 online or choose download copies that you can use on your PC. These are free to students via the University without need for student to purchase their own licences. More information can be found on Microsoft’s Office 365 support site.

6. Find your modules, tutors and groups 

Your course will be made up of modules. You can find all your modules in Brightspace. Each module will have an introduction announcement to welcome you. You will be able to explore each module and get a sense of the learning journey ahead of you. Your first session will be listed on your timetable in MyHud.

7. Explore Microsoft Teams 

Microsoft Teams is one of the key places we will meet online and learn together. Meeting, sharing and chatting very quickly becomes familiar and straightforward. Please ensure you use your University credentials to sign in to Teams.

8. Your Personal Academic Tutor 

Every taught student is allocated a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) who will be an academic in your school.  You will be offered the opportunity to meet with your PAT five times per year.  PATs are there to help you get the most out of your time at University, and to discuss academic progress so that you can achieve your best, and to direct you towards appropriate support services such as wellbeing and finance. 

It can take a couple of weeks at the start of term to allocate your PAT.  Your PAT will schedule a meeting with you early in your first term.  Once allocated you will be able to identify your PAT via MyHud and many PATs will be using the PAT module in Brightspace to coordinate your support and arrange meetings.
